השטן הגדולפרסית: شيطان بزرگ) הוא כינוי גנאי איראני עבור ארצות הברית. עיקר השימוש בביטוי הוא בהצהרות פוליטיות. היו גם מספר פעמים שבהן הביטוי כוון לממשלת בריטניה.

המונח שימש את האייתוללה רוחאללה ח'ומייני, לאחר המהפכה האיראנית בנאומו ב-5 בנובמבר 1979, כדי לתאר את ארצות הברית, שאותה האשים באימפריאליזם ובמתן חסות לשחיתות ברחבי העולם. הנאום התרחש יום אחד לאחר פרוץ משבר בני הערובה באיראן.

הממשלה שלאחר המהפכה האיראנית ראתה בארצות הברית ובבריטניה מדינות אימפריאליסטיות, שיש להן היסטוריה ארוכה של התערבות בענייניה הפנימיים של איראן. בשנת 1907, ההסכם האנגלו-רוסי (אנ') בין רוסיה לבריטניה חילק את איראן לתחומי השפעה, תוך התעלמות, מריבונותה של איראן אך ללא סיומה המוחלט. ב-1953, במהלך המלחמה הקרה, תכננו גורמי מודיעין בריטיים [1] והממשל של נשיא ארצות הברית דווייט אייזנהאואר מבצע אנגלו-אמריקאי משותף להפלת ראש ממשלת איראן הנבחר, מוחמד מוסדק.[2] [3] [4] ממשל אייזנהאואר היה מודאג מכך שהשאיפות הלאומיות של מוסדק עלולות להוביל בסופו של דבר להשתלטות קומוניסטית על איראן.[5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] המבצע קיבל את שם הקוד מבצע Ajax מטרת המבצע הייתה להפיל את ממשלתו הסמי-הדמוקרטית של מוחמד מוסאדק על ידי הפיכה צבאית ולאפשר לשאה מוחמד רזא פהלווי, לשוב למדינה ולשלוט בה ביד רמה. בתחילה נראה היה שההפיכה הצבאית נכשלה, והשאה מוחמד רזא פהלווי ברח מהמדינה. [11] [12] לאחר התפרעויות נרחבות ובעזרת ה-CIA ושירותי הביון הבריטיים, מוסדק הובס והשאה חזר לשלטון, מה שהבטיח תמיכה איראנית באינטרסים של המערב (בעיקר אלו של בריטניה) ושם קץ לאיום של התפשטות קומוניסטית. הגנרל פזל-אללה זאהדי, שהוביל את ההפיכה הצבאית, הפך לראש ממשלה בסיום המהפכה.

בשנת 1965 הוגלה האייתוללה חומייני בשל ביקורת על המהפכה הלבנה שבמסגרתה הוצעו מספר רב של רפורמות ליברליות באיראן. ב-5 בנובמבר 1979 במהלך נאום שנשא חומייני אמר "השטן הגדול, הנחש הפצוע". [19] כאשר התייחס לארצות הברית. המונח היה בשימוש נרחב במהלך ואחרי המהפכה האסלאמית, [20] והוא ממשיך לשמש בחוגים פוליטיים איראנים מסוימים ככינוי לארצות הברית. השימוש במונח בעצרות מלווה לרוב בצעקות "מארג בר אמריקה!" ("מוות לאמריקה"). הוא משמש גם בכתבי עת אקדמיים איראנים ככינוי לארצות הברית. [21]
