Hello!

Due to the newest changes to the search widget, the DWIM (do what I mean) gadget will temporarily stop functioning. The Foundation will be working on restoring it, but this will certainly take more than one month.

The DWIM gadget has been made to address the problem of typing on the wrong keyboard. When you intend to search something and mistakenly type Latin letters instead of Hebrew letters, the search makes no sense and no meaningful results are returned. Then the DWIM gadget interprets the letters backwards (right to left instead of left to right) and sends an additional request to the database in the search for results which would have been returned if Hebrew keyboard had been used.

Unfortunately, it's not possible not to affect this gadget while updating the search widget. We are truly sorry for that.

However, there's good news. The Search Platform team will be working not only on restoring this functionality, but also including it in API. This will make it work faster. The process of building this new code might take up to a few months.

For more technical details, see T262566 (Phabricator) and one the Search Platform team member's sandbox (MediaWiki.org).

Thank you!
