ethe birthright, the leadership for which in an earliergeneration Jacob had striven with Esau, now passedto Judah, the fourth son of Leah. He became andremained the active head of the household. Following Judahs fortunes, the Bible tells howhe too was punished for his wrong-doing, one of hiseldest sons dying after the other. Tamar, the widowof the eldest, was rewedded to the second; and whenhe too died, Judah, according to the custom of thetime, promised to wed her to the third. Yet he fearedto do so, in superstitious dread lest this one shouldalso die. Then Tamar waited for Judah by the road-side; and by cunning she tricked him into evil, andmade him give her his staff and signet ring. Havingpossession of these, she proclaimed her wrongs to theworld. Judah was stricken with remorse, and didfor her all that he had promised. His story andcharacter are both very similar to those of hisfather Jacob, uniting early craft withunderlying nobility, with later re-morse and strength and wisdom.

f Mi gnot^ ni ut;ij BY THE CONTEMPORARY ARTIST, GEORGES DEGEETERE. And Joseph was brought down to Egypt.—Gen.,89, 1. THE STORY of Joseph is the last and the mostromantic of the hero tales of Genesis. Theaccount of his many and remarkable shiftsof fortune, with his final rise to the second positionin the known world, reads almost like a fairy tale.Indeed the poetic qualities of the story have so at-tracted Eastern writers that Hebraic legend is full oftales of Joseph, adding a thousand details to the briefbut vigorous outline given in the Bible. In charac-ter also Joseph stands foremost, bei:ig both the heroand the -saint. We find in him neither the fiercenessof Abraham, the self-indulgence of Isaac, nor theguile of Jacob; and when in later life he had risento his highest, he remained as pure and noble as inhis days of trial. Of his later destiny he could, however, have noknowledge in the first moment of the overthrow of his3^outhful fortunes. Despite the surly grumblings ofhis broth
