אורי בר-יוסף הוא פרופסור (אמריטוס) במחלקה ליחסים בינלאומיים בבית ספר למדע המדינה באוניברסיטת חיפה. תחומי התמחותו הם ביטחון לאומי, מודיעין והסכסוך הערבי-ישראלי.

ביוגרפיה

כריכת הספר הצופה שנרדם, 2001

קיבל תואר ראשון במדע המדינה וסוציולוגיה מאוניברסיטת חיפה בשנת 1973, סיים לימודים לתואר שני ביחסים בינלואמיים באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים בשנת 1975. זוכה פרס כרמון לשנת 1983, קיבל את תואר הדוקטור ב-1990 מאוניברסיטת סטנפורד, והמנחה שלו בעבודת הדוקטורט היה אלכסנדר ג'ורג'. כסטודנט צעיר כתב בר יוסף תחת שם בדוי ארבעה ספרים שגיבורם הוא פטריק קים.[1]

ידוע בעיקר בשל מחקריו על מחדל מלחמת יום הכיפורים. ספרו "הצופה שנרדם" (2001) הוא המחקר האקדמי המפורט הראשון שנכתב על המחדל המודיעיני. ב-2003, במלאת 30 שנה למלחמה, הופקה הדרמה הטלוויזיונית "שתיקת הצופרים", שהסתמכה על ספר זה.

בשנת 2010 יצא לאור ספרו "המלאך" על אשרף מרואן, חתנו של הנשיא נאצר, אשר התרעתו ערב מלחמת יום כיפור כי תפרוץ מחר חזקה את המידע שהיה בידי ישראל. כשנה לאחר מכן יצאה מהדורה שנייה עם גילויים נוספים, ובו הראה לראשונה שאשרף מרואן המשיך לשרת את המודיעין הישראלי עד 1998. במסגרת עבודתו על פרשת יום הכיפורים, ובמיוחד על סיפורו של מרואן, גילה בר-יוסף כי מי שהדליף את זהותו של "המלאך" לעיתונים וסופרים זרים היה אלי זעירא, ראש אמ"ן בזמן המלחמה. המסמך שכתב על כך שימש בסיס לתלונה שהגישו אלוף-משנה יוסי לנגוצקי ותת-אלוף עמוס גלבוע, ואשר אליהם הצטרף גם ראש המוסד ב-1973 אלוף צבי זמיר, על כך שזהותו של המרגל הטוב ביותר שעבד אי פעם למען מדינת ישראל והציל אותה ב-1973, הודלפה על ידי אלי זעירא לאנשים בלתי מוסמכים. ביוני 2007 פסק המשנה לנשיא ביה"מ העליון (בדימוס) השופט תיאודור אור, בבוררות שערך בין זעירא לזמיר, כי זעירא אכן הדליף את שמו של מרואן לפחות לשלושה עיתונאים. כשבועיים וחצי לאחר פרסום פסק הבוררות של אור, מצא אשרף מרואן את מותו בנפילה מהמרפסת בקומה החמישית של דירתו בלונדון.

הספר "המלאך" (The Angel) יצא באנגלית בהוצאת הארפר קולינס בשנת 2016. בשנת 2017 הוא קיבל את פרס ה-National Jewish Book Award כספר הטוב ביותר בתחום ההיסטוריה ובמקביל נבחר על ידי אגודת קציני המודיעין האמריקאים בגמלאות (AFIO) כספר המודיעין הטוב ביותר. סרט שהפיקה חברת נטפליקס על בסיס הספר יצא למסכים בספטמבר 2018. בשנת 2018 הוציא גרסה מעודכנת לספר עם גילויים חדשים.

בשנת 2017 פרסם בר-יוסף יחד עם Rose McDermott את הספר Intelligence Success and Failure: The Human Factor. הספר שיצא בהוצאת אוקספורד עורך השוואה, ראשונה מסוגה, בין הצלחות וכישלונות להתמודד עם מתקפת פתע אסטרטגית ומסביר באמצעות ניתוח אישיות של שחקנים מרכזיים בתהליך ההתרעה-תגובה מדוע מדינות מופתעות מהמתקפה כאשר זו פורצת, למרות שעומד לרשותן מידע התרעתי מצוין.

בר יוסף חבר במועצה של הקרן החדשה לישראל.[2]
