For the 2011 Los Angeles Pride, I marched with a pan-Asian delegation, to show my support for LGBT rights in Asian communities of Southern California. Marching in the parade were these courageous Chinese LGBT activists, in the US as part of an internship program at Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, whose white T-shirts they are wearing. The two gentlemen on either side are from Guangzhou and Shanghai, while the young lady is from Wuhan. (A fourth intern, not seen in this photo, is a Beijing-based lesbian.) While China is not virulently homophobic, the Chinese government does not like anything that can be "disruptive," and has very heavy-handed censorship policies, and China's Confucian tradition is not women or LGBT-friendly, so being LGBT in China is not exactly a walk in the park. The gentleman in the red API Equality shirt, though having Chinese ethnic background, is not from China. He is Marshall Wong, co-founder of API Equality; his ancestors had left Guangdong Province and arrived in America in the 1870s. He, I, and other volunteers would spend four hours in the afternoon at API Equality's table at the festival nearby. |
