It was soon evident that, with a larger list, the arrangementof subscribers alphabetically was needed, and the second direc-tory, issued in San Francisco on June 1 of 1878 with 178 list-ings, was the first to record its subscribers in that orderlyfashion. As the telephone grew in popularity throughout the countryand the number of subscribers increased, with consequent in-crease in the number of listings in each directory, the oppor-tunity was recognized to increase the usefulness of the directoryservice to subscribers by issuing, in addition to the alphabeticaldirectories, lists of business subscribers grouped according tothe businesses they were engaged in. The user of the tele-phone directory would find this supplementary list an addi-tional convenience, and the value of telephone service tobusiness concerns would be enhanced. Beginning with a page or two, these classified lists of businesssubscribers have grown, along with the telephone business, to 32

SERVICE OF CLASSIFIED TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES the highly developed and useful classified telephone directoriesof the present day. The cities of the United States have classi-fied directories to the number of about 1,000, all of the largeand medium-sized cities beino; represented and many of thesmaller ones. The classified directory is bound under the samecover with the alphabetical directory, except in a few of thelarger cities where they are published as separate volumes be-cause of their bulk. To make the classified directories of maximum use to busi-ness men and subscribers, improvements have been made fromtime to time, and beginning in 1926 a rather complete changewas brought about. This included a new and better standardof typography, a better arrangement of the display advertising,and a revision of the classifications which made for greater easeof reference and completeness of the buying service.
