Meganeura monyi, espèce dont le premier spécimen fut découvert dans l'Allier en 1880, est l'un des plus grands insectes ayant jamais vécu sur Terre. Son envergure pouvait atteindre 70 cm. Les Méganeura sont apparentés aux Odonates (libellules et demoiselles). Ils se nourrissaient d'autres insectes ou de petits amphibiens.
