Ardennes American Cemetery is one of three American military cemeteries located in Belgium.
Many of the nearly 6,000 American fallen commemorated there perished in World War II air missions over Nazi-held Europe, or gave their lives during the Battle of the Bulge.
Ardennes is unique among all ABMC cemeteries as it served as the central identification point for the entire European Theater of Operations from the last days of the war until 1960.
Visitors to the cemetery are first met by the large, square memorial that overlooks the four plots of 5,317 graves.
Inside, inlaid marble panels depict combat and supply activities of WWII, among other ornamental features.
Outside, a massive eagle carved into the southern side of the memorial hovers over the nearby Tablets of the Missing, where 462 names are listed.
The American Battle Monuments Commission honors America's fallen service members and their stories at 26 overseas cemeteries and 31 monuments.
The other ABMC cemeteries in Belgium are the Flanders Field and Henri-Chapelle American cemeteries.
