« Dans Le Vieux Pont, Sainte-Marguerite, la présence humaine se fait beaucoup plus discrète que dans Coupeurs de glace, Longueuil. On n’y trouve aucun personnage, mais plutôt des signes que la nature représentée n’est pas complètement vierge, qu’elle a été domestiquée : une clôture dans la première et un pont dans la seconde. En cela, cette toile réalisée à la fin de la carrière de Cullen se distingue de la plupart des œuvres qu’il crée à cette époque.
