GIS

Please remind that these maps are made with free GIS data 1:1.000.000. We try to minimize mistakes but it is impossible to test and correct every line. The bigger a location map gets displayed the less accurate the location of the dot will be. Sometimes it also a question of a correct coordinates or where the dot is displaced: exactly on that coordinate or perhaps with its baseline above it. I don't like it either if the four-states-corner might be shown wrong but I have no possibility to check everything for 200 countries and x subdivision maps. Otherwise we wouldn't have finished the first map until now. We will have to live with it until there is better data. NNW - שיחה 10:48, 23 ביוני 2009 (IDT)

I understand. That is why I took my remarks out... However, I have to admit countries map are more accurate than states maps. On the 4 courners, it was easy to spot. I took Google earth right on the plate and indeed it was a little bit away. Areas belonging to the same country but to a different subdivision are usually shown in light gray like here. The islands to the left belong to Puerto Rico, so it's the USA, too. NNW - שיחה 10:59, 10 ביולי 2009 (IDT)

I do not agree with you. For USA you created a different scheme color for states, kind of light orange. See Ilinois map above. Right now orange is used for maps of France and of the USA. Also right now I'm a bit tired of discussing this work through lots of projects. Even the change of the Tanzania map doesn't work without my intervention although there are three adult users. This drives me mad and takes lots of energy. I thought I'm part of a transwiki-project, not its keeper and if the French part (they started with US maps) thinks it should be orange, well, then it's orange. Perhaps I will start a discussion about it in future time but not now. It can be easily changed so this can wait until I or anybody else want to do it. Well, I am working with you so I am not aware of all these clashes... Anyhow, the map now is more accurate, but still not in line with the rest of the USA. I hope you will resolve it soon. If you want my opinion, I support the scheme that states are in different color tham countries. It make life easier on border states. Hey NNW, we had some new developments around the maps, with a whole new bag of tricks... Take a look at מונדיאל 2010. Our original developer had just came back from South America, full of energy. But he wants his salary, a SVG map of Brazil. Current map is soooooo bad. Some cities are in the ocean. Can you give it a higher priority on the to do list. Explanation

First of all I would like to thank you for all your maps. It's much easier and nicer to work with them. And now I'll explain how our template works more or less. We have few templates:

• {{מפת מיקום}} - The main template that we use in the articles. (We'll call it {{location map}})
• {{מפת מיקום/לבנון}} - The second template that we have for each map. (We'll call it {{location map\country}} - in the example it's lebanon
• {{נקודת מיקום}} - The third template that put's the locator on the map. (We'll call it {{location point}})
• {{מציין מיקום}} - Another template the returns parameters of the locator icon required. (We'll call it {{locator icon}})
• {{נקודת מיקום/חישוב רגיל}} In this template we do the calculation of the location. There are different calculations for the Russian and Canadian maps and also for US map that we don't use. (We'll call it {{location calc}})

The user use the the "location map" template with the following parameters: Country (of the map), Name, Longtitude, Latitude (both in decimal), Detailed (Yes\No this parameters tells if you want the map to be with all the cities and countries in the map or only the site requierd), Text Direction (right\left to the locator), Font Size (precentage to the normal font size), Headline, Legend (optional to add leggend below the map), Type (The type of the locator we want to use). In addiation you can add up to 30 more locations to the map by the parameters "name1" , "long1"... "name30", "long30" if you want to add you need to right only the name, longtitude, latitude and type (you can add also the direction and size) When we use the multiple loactor option we don't use the detailed option to prevent overlapping (unless you know that all the locations that are being used in the multiple option are not in the detailed list).

The "location map" template calls the "loccation map\country" few times first for the background map as the lowest layer, second if asked it calls the detailed section, after if requierd it calls the additional 1-30, and last as the upper layer it call for the main locator.

The "location map\country" uses {{#switch}} ParserFunctions with 4 different section, each calls the "location point" a bit differently.

• "Background map" calls to put the map with the image width and headline, 4 border parameters, long, lat, name (with " "), calculation (usually noraml exept for canada and russia) & type (without icon).
• "Main" calls for the main locator with calculation, 4 border name, long, lat, text direction, font size & type.
• "Additional" almost similar to "main" with change of the default of the type.
• "Detailed" in this section you can called as many times as you want to "location point" for the detailed locations. If the main location is also in this part it won't call it twice.

The "location point" is the the final template that puts the locators on the map. In the first part it puts the map, then it checks if the lat & long are valid to the map, if not it gives an error sign if it's valid it calculate with "location calc" the location on the map, then put the locator while calling "locaotr icon" for specification, then putting the text also calling "locator icon".

This is more or less how the template works. Most of it I believe is similar to the templates in the other wikis, I have to say that I haven't built it from scratch we already had the template like in the other wikis for one locator and I took it and made few changes for the additional and detailed parts (with others helping with other changes), the first change which was critical was to move the </div> from the last template to the end of the first template.
