Highsmith Archive.; Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.; Keystone was founded in 1892 by the Keystone Coal & Coke Company. Its first mine, Keystone No. 1, produced for 94 years until it was exhausted in 1986. Most of the other coal mines in the area also played out, contributing to the severe downturn of the region's economy.
