Français : Caricature de la crise du 16 mai 1877 : Léon Gambetta, représentant de la majorité républicaine à la Chambre des députés, jaillit d'une boîte à surprise tel un diable à ressort devant le président de la République Patrice de Mac Mahon, maréchal dont les opinions monarchistes sont symbolisées par la fleur de lys. Surmonté d'un bonnet phrygien et du chiffre évoquant le manifeste des 363, un nuage darde des éclairs sur le président tandis que le représentant de la majorité républicaine à la Chambre des députés prononce la péroraison de son discours lillois du 15 août 1877 : « Se soumettre ou se démettre ». English: Caricature of the Crisis of May 16, 1877: Léon Gambetta, representing the republican majority in the Chamber of Deputies, bursts from a jack-in-the-box before President Patrice de MacMahon, a veteran marshal whose monarchist loyalties are represented by the fleur de lis above him. In the upper-right, topped by a phrygian cap and the number 363 (referring to the Manifesto of the 363), a storm cloud thunders above the president. Gambetta delivers the iconic closing line of his address in Lille on August 15 1877: "Submit or resign."
