ed inconnection with thedata furnished by thecuneiform inscriptions.Herodotus speaks of atemple and of an eight-storied tower sacred toBel, and many scholarssuggested that the tow-er referred to was notin the city of Babylon, but on the western sideof the Euphrates.Nebuchadnezzar, how-ever, in his inscriptionsexpressly refers to agreat tower which hebuilt in Babylon withinthe sacred area of E-sa-gila, and now that the latter has beenfound there is no longer any occasionto doubt that the tower likewise stood tothe south of the palace. The other object shows a mag-nificent figure of none other than Mar-duk himself, in all his dignity, clothedin handsome brocaded garments, andholding in his left hand a ring and staff, which were his symbols as the sun-god.He stands over the waters which
