d Corn-bury, a cousin of Queen Anne, who turned to hisown use the funds voted for the defense of the harbor, and toldthe Colonial Assembly that it had no rights but such as thequeen was pleased to allow it. He was more useful to thecolony, however, than a better governor might have been, forhe taught the people to stand for their rights. Here and therea royal officer may have been more just and kind, but as aclass they regarded their own interests first, Englands next,but a long way after, and those of the colonies last of all.Even at home those who had charge of colonial affairs wereusually less wise than great. The Duke of Newcastle, who for twenty-four years was minister for British America,A. D. 1724-1748. ... . . , , . ... . owed his position partly to his stupidity, the prime minister fearing to have able men about him. The duke is said to have directed letters to the Island of New England, and to have been unable to tell whether Jamaica is in the Mediterranean Sea or elsewhere.
