Davis was horn in Kentucky the year before Lincoln.His college education began in that State. In 1S42 he entered West Point. Army service provedhis ability to command. In the Mexican War lie won distinction as colonel of the Firsl MississippiVolunteers by the famous reentering angle at Buena Vista. As Senator from Mississippi andSecretary of War under President Pierce, he became the accepted leader ot the Southern party intheir insistence on the doctrine of States rights. His unanimous election as President of the Con-federacy on Februarys, 1861, by the Congress at Montgomery. Alabama, was unsought.
