English: William Smith monument at Churchill, Oxfordshire, England. William Smith, known as the Father of Geology, was born at Churchill in Oxfordshire on March 23rd 1769. His story was told in the recent book by Simon Winchester "The Map That Changed The World". The memorial was erected in the village of his birth by the Earl of Ducie in 1891, using stones found in nearby Sarsgrove Wood.
