Uncle Arie's Adventures

The Adventures of Uncle Aryeh is a series of best-selling children's books by Inz Levy that is accompanied by a website.

The protagonist of the series is Uncle Arieh who tells his nephews imaginary adventures in fictional districts. The books in the series are in the genre of exaggeration, practicality and fantasy. Uncle Arieh's adventures are integrated into a realistic frame story, with situations from a family's daily life. The series is illustrated by the illustrator Yaniv Shimoni. For the first book in the series, Shimoni won the Israel Museum Award for illustrating a children's book named after Ben-Yitzhak. The first book won the Public Libraries Award for 2010. In 2016, "The Adventures of Uncle Arieh in the Swiss Desert" won the Devorah Omer Minister of Culture and Sports Award in the category of the most borrowed children's or youth book in public libraries. The series' books appear in the official curriculum of the Ministry of Education.

The Adventures of Uncle Arie in the Romanian steppe

In the book, Uncle Aryeh tells his nephew Tzafrir the adventures that happened to him in the fictional province of the Romanian prairie: how he once got stuck in a cloud, how his four hairs saved him from death, how he once became a cockroach, what happened to him in the kingdom of the hands and how he fought the demon. The frame story in this book focuses on the conflict between Tzafrir and his older brother Yinon who does not believe in the stories of Uncle Arieh. The book was published in 2007 and included 75 pages.

Uncle Arieh Adventures in the Siberian Jungle

In the book, Uncle Aryeh tells his nephew Tzafrir the adventures that happened to him in the fictional province of the Siberian Jungle: how he was punished in the kingdom of Gurzia for garlic that was foreign; What happened to him in the village of Tzachakov where the laughter was replaced by tears; What happened when he met the real Uncle Arieh in the mirror; And how he faced a giant weeping at sea. In this book, too, the frame story focuses on the conflicts between Tzafrir and his brother Yinon, and the big brother again humiliates Tzafrir. uncle Arieh's stories are a source of comfort for Tzafrir. The book was published in 2009 and included 85 pages.

uncle Arieh Adventures in the Swiss Desert

In the book, uncle Aryeh tells his nephews Tzafrir and Winon about adventures that happened to him in the Swiss desert fictional province: how he became a superstar in a country called Kalumnistan; How he tried to save the world from all diseases with the help of a miracle cure; What happened to him in the land of chocolate; And how he had to pretend to be a doll when he fell into the hands of monsters. Although the frame story in this book tells of conflicts between Tzafrir and his brother Yinon, it focuses on the gap between children and adults and the fact that adults have authority over children. The book was published in 2010 and included 79 pages.

The Adventures of uncle Arieh in the West Pole

In this book, uncle Arieh tells his nephews an adventure that happened to him in the imaginary province of the Western Pole: how he completely lost his memory; How he became half a woman; How he became a laboratory animal of scientists and giant monkeys; And how he had a dream he could not get rid of. Compared to previous books in the series in this book a darker hue characterizes the adventures. The frame story in this book focuses on feelings of failure that Tzafrir experienced. Released in 2011 and included 87 pages.

The adventures of uncle Arieh in the Sahara forests

In this book, uncle Arieh tells his nephews adventures that happened to him in the fictional space of the Sahara forests: how he slept for more than two hundred years; An adventure about his bird family; How he lived at an accelerated speed in the city of Mahran; And the troubles he got into when he got to a huge robot factory. The frame story in this book focuses on Tzafrir's difficulty with the much attention his parents give to his little sister Ilail. The book was published in 2012 and included 87 pages.

uncle Arieh Adventures in the Tibetan Ocean

In this book, uncle Arieh tells his nephews the adventures that happened to him in the imaginary island region of the Tibetan Ocean: how he met pale dwarves in a sea monster; How to make a perfume from his sweat on the island of odors; How he had access to all the knowledge in the world in the absence of its data; And how he met his mother and father in the underworld. The frame story in this book focuses on Tzafrir's feeling that his brother and parents are not attentive to him. The book was published in 2014 and included 95 pages.

The book series is accompanied by uncle Arieh's website. All the contents in it are presented by the literary figure, uncle Arieh. The purpose of the site is to encourage reading among children and it offers online activities, surfing content and printing activities - for home and school. The site offers fan fiction activities, and features many adventures written by surfers. In addition, on the website of the uncle Arieh encyclopedia, where surfers write entries from the world of uncle Arieh in books.

In February 2016, the children's play in Arabic, with the participation of the audience, "Amu Osama" ("uncle Arieh") at the Almina Theater in Jaffa [5]. The play, directed by Norman Issa, was written by Levy, who has knowledge of Arabic. This is a play based on the first book in the uncle Arieh adventure series translated into Arabic as mentioned above. The show has run in schools, libraries and community centers across the country. In December 2017, the play "The Adventures of uncle Arie and the Witch of Her Wrath" by Levy was staged at the Habima National Theater, directed by Roi Segev and starring Tal Musari [5]. The play tells the story of an adventure that does not appear in the book series. A play based on the adventure books of uncle Arieh was staged in the Czech Republic at the Listovani Theater [6]. The character of uncle Arieh also appears in the musical comedy show "The Adventures of Yitzhak Levy", in which Levy meets characters from his books and performs solid songs on stage together with musicians.

References to books in Israeli culture[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]

On September 27, 2014, political commentator Tal Schneider dedicated a post on the political blog "The Flug" to the conduct of then-Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. In the post, Schneider compared the Foreign Minister's activities and frequent visits abroad to several of uncle Arieh's adventures [7] while incorporating page photographs from the series' books. On February 1, 2016, in a speech by MK Manuel Trachtenberg, the MK read from the adventure "uncle Arieh Superstar" in the book "The Adventures of uncle Arieh in the Swiss Desert". The Knesset member attacked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the many roles he holds, similar to the many roles offered to uncle Arieh in adventure. Trachtenberg compared the conduct of Netanyahu to the conduct of the Prime Minister of Kalumnistan that appears in the adventure. He concluded by saying, "The State of Israel is on its way to Kalmanistan" [8].


On September 15, 2017, a cartoon by the illustrator Liav Tsabari was published in the weekend supplement of the Maariv newspaper, in which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears in the person of uncle Arieh alongside the headline "Netanyahu's Adventures in Latin America."
