The main page of the Arabic Wikipedia on December 23, 2023, during the blackout as a "gesture of solidarity with the Palestinians."

In December 2023, the Arabic Wikipedia was darkened for one day as a 'gesture of solidarity with the Palestinians.' All edits to the project were halted on that day, and the main page was replaced with a black page on which was written:

"Arabic Wikipedia blackout" for 24 hours on 23rd of December, protesting in objection to the continuing genocide in Gaza and calling to end the war and spread the just and comprehensive peace.

Closing the Arabic Wikipedia in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Stop genocide in Gaza.
Stop Killing civilians.
Stop targeting hospitals and schools.
Stop misinformation and disinformation.
Stop double standards.
Stop the war.. Spread the just and comprehensive peace.

The page also included the Wikipedia logo wrapped in the Palestinian flag.

Since then, the Arabic Wikipedia displays a banner that says (in a free translation):

As part of the solidarity with the Palestinian people's rights
Not to massacre in Gaza... Not to the killing of civilians
No to attacks on hospitals and schools... No to misleading and double standards
Stop the war... And spread fair and comprehensive peace

The links in the banner (and on the page displayed during the darkening of the Arabic Wikipedia) lead to the following pages in the Arabic Wikipedia:

• The link from "massacre" leads to the article "The 2023 Israeli-Palestinian war."
• The link "killing civilians" leads to a category named "Massacre during the Israeli-Palestinian war 2023."
• The link "attacks on hospitals and schools" leads to the article "Attacks on health facilities during the Israeli-Palestinian war 2023."
• The link "No to misleading and double standards" leads to the article "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood."

The banner is accompanied by the Wikipedia logo wrapped in the Palestinian flag. Additionally, the regular Wikipedia logo was replaced with the Wikipedia logo in the colors of the Palestinian flag.

All requests to the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia projects, from Hebrew Wikipedia editors and representatives on behalf of Wikimedia Israel, asking to address the political use made by Arabic Wikipedia editors of the Wikipedia project, were left unanswered.
