English: Bust of Admiral John Hunter (1737 - 1821) Born at Leith, Admiral Hunter was appointed Second Captain ,under Governor Phillip, on "Sirius" in the "First Fleet" sent to colonise Australia. He became the second Governor of the colony and undertook much exploration and surveying. The Hunter River and famous wine growing area of Hunter Valley are named after him. He is buried in Hackney Old cemetery, London.
The bust is located at the Shore gate to Leith Docks and the gates,also shown in the picture, are a representation of a billowing sail.
