The name of Taher AlGamal should be written in consonants only as "טאהר אל-גמל" as there's no alef in "Gml". This problem is attested in both languages when transliterating names from the other (Arabic<=>Hebrew) because of the 1) use of European languages as a mediator; and 2) the tendency induced by early days of "the press" to not include diacritics and use "long vowels" instead in transliterating foreign names (at least As far as Arabic is concerned).
Other examples of this phenomena include:
- בָּרָק: transliterared as باراك via the Latin script "Barak", when it should be بَرَق;
- מנחם: transliterated as مناحم via the Latin script "Manachem" when it should be مَنَحِم;
- חכם: transliterated as حاخام via the Latin script "hacham" when it should be حكم (حخم)
all of which when transliterated into Arabic Acquire extra vowles not present in Hebrew. Not to mention of course that modern Hebrew is after all a mutant language thanks to Europeans who mutated it while reforming it.
You must have many examples from the other direction, but I'd like to mention: محمد which is transliterated into Hebrew as מוחמד via Latin script "Muhammad"
