My parents were in service when they met. My mother gave up work when I was born but my father worked for a powerful political family, the Margessons, in Warwickshire, and we lived in a cottage in the grounds. In the war, my father was sent to do war work on Rolls-Royce engines in Nottingham. We lived in a Coronation Street setting, but there was no feeling of deprivation or envy.
