ורוקיני
הווֵרוּקיני (בלטינית: Verucini) היו שבט גאלי ששכן בפנים הארץ של דרום מזרח פרובאנס בתקופת הברזל.
שם
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]הוורוקיני תועד אך ורק על ידי פליניוס הזקן כ-Verucini במאה ה-1 לספירה.[1][2]
השם האתני Verucini הוא צורה לטינית של Uerucinoi הגאלית. הוא נובע מהשורש ueru - (גדול), וקשור לשמות האישיים Ueru-cloetius, Ueru-clonis, Ueruccius ו-Ueruco.[3]
גאוגרפיה
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]פליניוס מתאר את הטריטוריה של הוורוקיני כממוקמת ליד שבט הסואלטרי (סן טרופה). נראה שהם חיו בין הנהרות ארז'אנס (אנ') וורדון (אנ'), ליד דראגיניאן המודרנית, סאלרן ואופס (Draguignan, Salernes, Aups).[4] ה"דאוס מארס ורקיניוס" מעיד במעבר אדון (אנ'). זו הייתה כנראה האלוהות המגינה של הוורוקיני, ואולי גם על הנוסעים לאזור הררי זה.[5]
