Hello Amir. I visited your embassy to ask some questions about your community experiences with Shulze method which has previously been used on Hebrew Wikipedia on several occasions: ויקיפדיה:סדנה לגרפיקה/100,000/הצבעה, ויקיפדיה:סדנה לגרפיקה/סמליל, ויקיפדיה:פרלמנט. It seems that in your embassy, questions should be addressed directly to the specified users rather than being posted in a public manner. I have seen your name on Persian Wikipedia several times and also know you from Quora. Consequently, I came to the conclusion that you are the right person to contact with.

We have run several elections for a kind of ArbCom at Persian Wikipedia using the conventional Support/Oppose/Abstain voting system during the past 6 years. We also have developed some "strange" rules to fix some loopholes mainly arising from low turnout. These strange conditions seem to disqualify some candidates on an "arbitrary" basis and were lambasted by several community members. We have formed an investigating committee to find the most appropriate voting system for our elections. I am a member of that committee. The committee is now considering alternative voting systems, with Schulze method being one of them. Since we have no prior experience in using a preferential voting system, we found it extremely useful to get some feedback from other communities which have used it before. As a well-organized and high-quality project, Hebrew Wikipedia can be a rich source of insight.

We have already "delved" deeply into the Wikimedia Board elections and are aware of the crucial role that User:Risker played on 2013 election committee in switching from Schulze method to the enwiki method. We also know that Schulze method is specifically designed to elect a single-winner, not a list of winners.

My questions from the Hebrew Wikipedia community are:

  • Do you still use the Schulze method or any other preferential voting systems?
  • Have you ever used the Schulze method for any important elections other than celebrating logos?
  • Have you been content with it? How about the man on the street? if not, Have you tried to instruct him?
  • Any other feedback is welcome!

Amir, I have another request from you. As a native speaker of Russian, could you take a look at the Russian Wikipedia ArbCom and see if they still use the Schulze method for their elections? We know they did so for their 2010 elections but language barrier makes further research difficult. Sincerely ~~~~

Hi,

I guess that it will disappoint you, but I cannot answer your questions. I am vehemently opposed to any kind of vote-count decision-making in Wikipedia, on any topic, and in any language. I don't know and don't want to know anything about voting systems, and I never participate in votes in my Wikipedia activities. The only exception are the Wikimedia Foundation board elections, in which I do vote; I dislike that voting system just as vehemently, but this election is too important to ignore and very unfortunately no-one came with anything better yet.

If you nevertheless want to know anything about voting in the Wikipedias in Hebrew and Russian, you'll have to ask somebody else, but I strongly urge you to do something better: join me in boycotting all voting-based decision-making in Wikipedia.

Your response was really disappointing :-)

Could you at least introduce the brains behind the implementation of Schulze method at Hebrew Wikipedia to me? Do you know any Hebrew-speaking user who is obsessed with voting systems?

By the way, you need to clearly point out in your embassy that questions may be posted to the Talk page! A boring description of the Hebrew language followed by a list of volunteers is of little use, if not misleading :-)

Sorry, I really don't know who can I suggest. I completely boycott this topic.

And thanks for the feedback about the embassy page - I'll try to find time to improve it.
