Als der Wolf erwachte, ging er zum Brunnen, um zu trinken. Er bückte sich zum Wasser hinab, da zogen ihn die schweren Steine in seinem Bauch in die Tiefe. Jämmerlich mußte er ertrinken. Die Alte mit ihren sieben Geißlein aber tanzte voll Freude um den Brunnen und rief: „Der Wolf ist tot!“
