English: Limehouse Reach, London Coastal craft can be seen on the river. The two in the foreground are at anchor and are probably drying their sails. A frigate is to the right of the picture, with a boat in full sail beyond. Behind the frigates, a windmill can be seen on the shoreline and, to its right, Greenwich Hospital. The Scottish-born artist was heavily influenced by 17th-century Dutch marine artists. He is best known for his works in this style although he also produced larger history paintings. |
