ג'וליה נולדה ב-27 בפברואר 1950 בהמפסטד לונדון. אימה ליזל ווולטר שוואב (Schwab הגיעה לאנגליה כפליטה מגרמניה הנאצית ב-1937. אביה וולטר היה בן להורים שהגיעו מגרמניה לפני מלחמת העולם הראשונה. ג'וליה למדה בתיכון ברובע מגוריה (South Hampstead High School)(אנ').

השכלה ומסלול אקדמי[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]

לאקסלברג תואר ראשון ממכללת רדקליף. תואר שני ודוקטורט מאוניברסיטת פרינסטון. ב-1972 הצטרפה לסגל סמיס קולג' והייתה שם מהפרופסוריות הראשונות בתכנית ללימודי נשים. ב-2007 מונתה לממונת הקתדרה על שם וויליאם קינן. ב-2014 פרשה לגימלאות.

במהלך השנים,במסגרת חלט"ים או שבתונים, לימדה וחקרה במספר אוניברסיטאות. ביניהן: המכון למחקר מתקדם של מכללת רדקליף (אנ') 1983-1984; המכון למחקר נשים (Institute for Research on Women) של אוניברסיטת קולומביה 1987-1988; מרכז וולט ויטמן לתרבות ופוליטיקה באוניברסיטת ראטגרס 1992-1993;

She also taught occasionally at Hampshire College and at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and spent a semester (two terms) on a faculty exchange at the School of Social Sciences of the University of Sussex. She spent leave and/or sabbatical time as a fellow at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College (1983–84), as a faculty associate of the Center for European Studies at Harvard University (1983–84), a visiting scholar at the Institute for Research on Women at Columbia University (1987–88), a visiting fellow at the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy at Rutgers University (1992–93), and as a member of the interdisciplinary Human Security Seminar cosponsored by CUNY Graduate Center and the National Center for Research on Women, 2003–04. During the 2010–11 academic year, she served as resident director of PRESHCO (Programa de Estudios Hispánicos-Córdoba), a consortial junior-year abroad program in which Smith participates. She served as campus representative to PRESHCO between 2011 and 2014, and then as executive director of PRESHCO from January 2014 through September 2015.

Her teaching, research and writing all center on the nature and structure of political communities, and, in particular, patterns of power and participation within them

feminism, anarchism, democratic theory, and Jewish ethics,

Ackelsberg joined the faculty at Smith College in 1972.[2] Ackelsberg was one of the first professors in the Women's studies program at Smith College, which she has been credited with helping to build.[3] Throughout her first several decades as a professor, Ackelsberg was active in Jewish feminist activism with groups like B'not Esh.[4] In 2006, she was appointed the Five College 40th Anniversary Professor at Smith College, and in 2007 she was named the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor.[2] She retired in 2014.[
