ליונל מרדכי טרילינג (באנגלית: Lionel Trilling;‏ 4 ביולי 1905 – 5 בנובמבר 1975) היה פרופסור ומבקר ספרות יהודי-אמריקאי. טרילינג היה ממבקרי הספרות המובילים של המאה ה-20, והתעסק רבות בתמורות הפוליטיות והחברתיות של יצירות ספרות מודרניות. יחד עם אשתו דיאנה, נמנה עם קבוצת האינטלקטואלים של ניו-יורק.

חיים אישיים ואקדמיים

טרילינג נולד בקווינס, ניו יורק, למשפחה יהודית. אמו הייתה פאני (לבית כהן), יהודייה אנגלית, ואביו דוד היה חייט מביאליסטוק. בגיל 16 החל טרילינג ללמוד באוניברסיטת קולומביה, שם השתתף במערכת העיתון. לאחר סיום התואר, החל ללמד באוניברסיטת וויסקונסין ובמכללת האנטר. בשנת 1929 נישא לדיאנה (לבית רובין), שם החלה שותפות ספרותית בין השניים. בשנת 1932 חזר לאוניברסיטת קולומביה במסגרת לימודי דוקטורט, שלאחריו החל ללמד בקולומביה. בשנת 1939 נהיה פרופסור חבר בסגל, והיה ליהודי הראשון בקולומביה שקיבל קביעות. בין הסטודנטים שלימד ניתן למצוא את ג'ק קרואק, אלן גינסברג, סינתיה אוזיק, ועוד.

האינטלקטואלים של ניו-יורק

בשנת 1937 הצטרף טרילינג למערכת העיתון של ה-Partisan Review, עיתון מרקסיסטי אך אנטי-סטליניסטי שהיה מזוהה עם תנועת האינטלקטואלים של ניו-יורק. יחד עם בני הזוג טרילינג, קבוצה זו מנתה גם אינטלקטואלים כגון חנה ארנדט, סול בלו, אלפרד קייזין, מרי מקארתי, וסוזן סונטג.
