עוזי אבנר (נולד ב-28 בינואר 1944) הוא ארכאולוג ישראלי, שהתבלט במחקרים ארכאולוגיים של הדרכים העתיקות, אתרי הפולחן ואתרי החקלאות הקדומים בדרום הנגב, ההערבה ובמדבר סיני.אבנר הוא פרופסור במכון הערבה. אבנר גילה וסקר מספר עצום של אתרים ארכאולוגיים בערבה , בנגב ובסיני תוך העלאת תובנות חדשות לגבי תרבויות היסטוריות באזורים אלה במיוחד בימי הקדם , אבל גם בימי הביניים ותקופות יותר מאוחרות.

ביוגרפיה

עוזי אבנר נולד ב-1944 בירושלים. מגיל צעיר אהב טיולי טבע והוקסם על ידי נופי המדבר. אחרי השירות הצבאי, אחרי מספר שנים שבהם היה חבר הקיבוץ הזורע ,ב-1969 התיישב באילת. בצעירותו היה מורה דרך ומדריך בבית הספר שדה באילת הוא למד בשנים 1977-1973 ארכאולוגיה והיסטוריה באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, ושוב ב-1983-1987 ארכאולוגיה, היסטוריה, אנתרופולוגיה וגאוגרפיה . ב-2002 סיים אבנר בהצטיינות יתרה עבודת דוקטורט בנושא "מחקרים על התרבות החומרית והרוחנית של אוכלוסיות הנגב וסיני באלפים השישי ועד השלישי לפני הספירה". יועציו היו הפרופסורים אבי מזר ונייגל גורינג מוריס. הוא כיהן ב- 1999-1977 כארכאולוג מחוז הדרום של רשות העתיקות , כמרצה בשלוחת אוניברסיטת בן גוריון באילת וכחוקר במרכז מו”פ מדבר וים המלח.

למשך 35 שנה התמסר אבנר לחקר חברות הנוודים הקדומים ולשימורם וטיפוחים של אתרי הארכאולוגיה והסביבה של המדבר.

אחת התרומות החשובות שלו הייתה גילוין וסריקתן של אתרי מצבות עם ייצוג "ללא דמות" של אלילים של בני עמים נוודים בארץ ישראל ובקרבתה שפתחו דרך לאפשרויות חדשות בחקר התפתחות דתם של בני ישראל. הוא חקר גם את החקלאות המדברית הקדומה בתקופה שבין 6000 לפה"ס - עד 1100 לספירה), את מכרות הנחושת ותפוקתה בערבה - בין 4500 לפה"ס ןעד 1100 לספירה), את חברות של ציידי המדבר בסביבות 4000 לפה"ס , את מערכות הדרכים במדבר בעת העתיקה בסביבות 7000 לפה"ס, את תרבות הנבטים בנגב ובסיני, את ציורי הסלעים של בני המדבר
