נשיא ארה"ב הוא ראש המדינה הנבחר של ארצות הברית, וכן ראש הממשלה שלה. הנשיא מוביל את הרשות המבצעת של הממשל הפדרלי בארה"ב, והוא המפקד העליון של הכוחות המזויינים של ארה"ב. הנשיא נבחר בעקיפין לכהונה בת ארבע שנים על ידי חבר האלקטורים.

מאז שהמשרד הוקם בשנת 1789, 44 גברים שימשו כנשיא (ואף לא אישה אחת). הראשון, ג'ורג' וושינגטון, זכה ברוב קולות אלקטורליים. גרובר קליבלנד כיהן בשתי כהונות שלא היו רצופות במשרד, ולכן נחשב לנשיא מספר 22 ו-24; הנשיא המכהן, דונלד טראמפ, הוא לכן הנשיא ה-45. כיום ישנם חמישה נשיאים לשעבר שעוד חיים -ג'ימי קרטר, ג'ורג' הרברט ווקר בוש, ביל קלינטון, ג'ורג' ווקר בוש וברק אובמה. אלה חמישה מששת הנשיאים הקודמים של ארה"ב, כאשר רונלד רייגן כיהן בין קרטר לבוש (האב) אך נפטר בשנת 2004. הרשימה הזו התעדכנה לאחרונה ב26 בדצמבר 2006, עם מותו של ג'רלד פורד.

כהונתן של ויליאם הנרי הריסון הייתה הקצרה ביותר בהיסטוריה האמריקנית - הוא נפטר 31 ימים אחרי שנכנס לתפקיד ב-1841. פרנקלין ד' רוזוולט שירת במשך הזמן הארוך ביותר, מעל 12 שנים, לפני שמת בתחילת כהונתו הרביעית ב-1945.  הוא נשיא ארה"ב היחידי שכיהן יותר משתי קדנציות, ומעט לאחר סיום כהונותיו אושרר התיקון העשרים ושניים לחוקת ארצות הברית, בשנת 1951, לפיו אין אדם יכול להיבחר לנשיאות יותר מפעמיים, ואף אדם ששירת כבר שנתיים בתקופה בה אדם אחר היה הנשיא הנבחר לא יוכל להיבחר יותר מפעם אחת.[1]

מבין הנשיאים, ארבעה מתו מסיבות טבעיות במהלך תפקידם (ויליאם הנרי האריסון, זאכרי טיילור, וורן הרדינג, ופרנקלין דלאנו רוזוולט). ארבעה נוספים נרצחו (אברהם לינקולן, ג 'יימס גארפילד, ויליאם מקינלי, וג'ון פיצ'גרלד קנדי), ואחד נוסף פרש (ריצ'רד ניקסון). ג'ון טיילר היה סגן הנשיא הראשון שאייש את המשרה במהלך כהונה של נשיא אחר, ובכך קיבע את התקדים לפיו סגן הנשיא שעושה זאת נהיה נשיר בתפקוד מלא עם נשיאותו שלו, ולא רק באופן זמני. התיקון העשרים וחמישה לחוקה נתן לתקדים של טיילר תוקף חוקי ב-1967. נקבע גם מנגנון לפיו יש למלא את הוואקום בתפקיד סגן-הנשיא שנוצר במצב כזה. ניקסון היה הראשון שדאג למלא וואקום כזה כאשר מינה את ג'רלד פורד. בהמשך, פורד היה השני לעשות זאת כאשר מינה את נלסון רוקפלר. לפני כן, הוואקום היה נשאר ריק.
